Do you feel like your faith makes you a minority, maybe even a target of hostility? Is it easier to blend in with the world around you and not make waves? Does truth sometimes feel hard to identify? How is a Christian to live in this world? These relatable questions were addressed roughly 2000 years ago, in the three New Testament letters in this study. Early Christ-followers were navigating their way through Jewish resentment, Roman harassment, moral challenges, and their own questions and doubts.
In his first letter Peter acknowledges their difficult status as exiles – God’s people living within godless cultures – but reminds them of His provision, and calls them up to higher, holier lives. He challenges them to change their perspective and see Christ as their example, enduring suffering with faith in God’s promises. His second letter focuses on knowledge, urging discernment and correct thinking as a foundation for right living. Why is Jude’s letter included in this study? It has much in common with 2 Peter, including some puzzling passages found only in these two books! All three will encourage us, in our trials and frustrations, to stand firm, live holy, and trust God for all we need to live lives that honor Him.
