Talk to Your God: Book of Psalms

How should we read and think about this unusual book? Psalms was likely organized into the structure we have today by the mid 400’s BC, as Jews returned to Jerusalem following their captivity, and the priest Ezra labored to reestablish and renew worship practices. The book of Psalms is a curated collection of hymns and prayers that the Israelites used as their guidebook for worship, and as we look at it this way ourselves, we will find in it a language to enrich our conversations with the Lord.

Think of some of the common phrases we use when we talk to our God, statements and questions like thank you, forgive me, teach me, help me, and why, Lord? These expressions will be our focus, and we’ll look at ways our own experiences and emotions might be reflected in the ancient words of the Psalms. God’s people have used the Psalms throughout centuries to pour out their hearts to Him, and as such they give us a vocabulary to do the same. In their poetry and declarations, we find ways to better worship God, and to express our own hearts as we walk with Him.
